All Eaten Up "Architect Matt Darwon, has given Tokonoma a soft, smooth and fluid look and feel, in comparison to Toko's raw and sharp-edged interior while artist, Reni Kung, who created the sun-like light scrulpture comprising 60,000 matchsticks at Toko, has once angain used everyday raw materials to crate a light sculpture to tokonoma. Made entirely of lentils, perspex, resin and metal objects, the sculpture is an impressive 11 metres long and is entitled 'Water'."
Time Out Sydney Toko - Bar mode The light sculpture "The idea came in London," says Toko bar's artist and designer Reni Küng. "I started making them on a small scale and it grew. I met one of the Yazbek brothers (owners of Toko) and we clicked. They had several ideas and we went through glass, plastic... I came up with different versions. I thought the light sculpture suited the space and the Japanese feel. Of all features (especially in a bar) it's just about being drawn into it and being calmed by it. "I used wood the size of matchsticks placed on Perspex - each one is individually laid in place by hand. Making it was a journey. Like a painting, you can't ask or delegate and it takes on a life of itself. My base is repetition and if you follow repetition in an organic way, something happens - it's the creative process. You have an idea of what may work and you need to just go with it - if you plan it too much, something like this can do your head in! It took three months to make - it was a pretty full on. I always use found materials and I work with everything - plastic, glass, lentils... I really like seed pods. Somehow the wood lights stood out more than anything else though. People seem to notice them the most." Surry Hills
Daily Addict "Judging by the crowd on opening night, a seat at one of the back booths is high in demand. Flanked by artist Reni Kung's 'Water' installation - an 11 metre long sculpture made entirely of lentils, perspex, resin and metal objects, here's the spot to feast on bite-size dishes or the popular 11-course tasting menu ($70)."
Sydney Morning Herald "Of the $1 million Al Yazbek and his brothers Matt and Dan spent refurbishing their newly opened Toko restaurant in Surry Hills, $10,000 really stands out. That's the $10,000 that went on the feature artwork, a 1.8m-wide circular installation by designer Reni Kung, a fantastically intricate light fixture that hangs, blazing like a small sun, at the far end of the bar. "It's made with 20,000 individually placed matchsticks," Yazbek says. "I think we actually got a real bargain on it."
Sydney Morning Herald "You can't book for dinner, which means a wait in the bar so gloomy the cocktail list comes with a tiny book light, although there are plans to change this. I'm mesmerised by Reni Kung's hypnotic sculpture, which looks like an exploding star. The L-shaped space, in warm caramel-coloured timbers, has a warehouse feel. Four communal tables with bum-numbing stools span the room."
Indesign Live "Artist Reni Kung draws the eye to the impressive 11 metre long light made of 500,000 lentils set in resin, which creates a celestial ambiance for diners enjoying the degustation menu from the leather upholstered booths to one side of the room. "
Miettas "Entering the spiffing, yet dusky, interior of this hot'n'cool establishment. Sister to a sushi bar in Paddington of the same name, Toko inhabits the old MG Garage site and fairly throbs with smartly dressed handsome people, a striking interior design and well coiffed (head and face) barmen who take their craft very seriously. When my night vision kicks in and the throbbing in my shoulder subsides, Toko's delights are clear.First up, this is no snobby place. ... Below a beautiful ceiling of arcing wood panels, their faces are honey-toned from artist Reni Kung's extraordinary light installation on the wall, constructed with 200,000 hand-placed matchsticks."
Mecho - The Style Black Book "Artist, Reni Kung who created the stunning sun-like sculpture comprising 60,000 matchsticks at Toko has again used everyday raw materials to create a light sculpture for tokonoma. The 11 metres long sculpture “Water”, runs along the wall and is made entirely of lentils, perspex, resin and metal objects. I love how artists do their best to use sustainable design to create a space for the public to appreciate and wile an evening away. "
Appetite "Dominating the bar is a sun-like installation by artist Reni Kung, comprising 200,000 hand-placed matchsticks, that looks well worth the effort."
